Bowen’s Shaniah Power voted Try of the Year at the 2021 NRLW DallyM Awards

Gold Coast Titans second rower and former Whitsunday Brahmans junior Shaniah Power has taken out the award for her astounding individual effort against the Brisbane Broncos. She lays out what’s to come next.

It took one blistering run for Shaniah Power to leave her mark in the 2021 NRLW season.

The Bowen-born 25-year-old didn’t want to go wide, dodging a dominant minor premier outfit to find the post and rack up the points for her Gold Coast Titans.

And the dominant run was duly recognised, voted the Try of the Year at the 2021 NRLW Dally M Awards.

Her second rower’s strategy worked, the try coming from a fierce show of strength to cross at the goalposts.

Power, who moved to the Titans following a one-year stint with the New Zealand Warriors, said it was a major surprise to receive the award.

“There were so many good tries and I think mine was chosen because it was more of an individual try,” she said.

Breaking down her award-winning cross of the white, Power said she started her run with the simple plan of not wanting to go too wide.

She wove around Broncos’ defenders down the middle, catching the defence off guard and culminating with her crashing into the goalpost and planting the ball over the line.

It proved pivotal in the Titans handing the Broncos their sole regular-season loss for the 2021 campaign.

“Against the Broncos, you’ve just got to take any opportunity you can get,” Power said.

“They’re such a great team and to be able to go over for our team was special.”

Power was awarded best afield honours and Players’ Player in the Round 4 match.

She finished the year with two starts from her six appearances in what she believes was an underwhelming year at the Titans.

“We were really hoping for more. We thought we had the side to win the comp,” Power said.

The former Whitsunday Brahmans junior remains uncontracted following the Titans’ semi-final exit at the hands of the Illawarra Dragons.

She said that she was looking forward to season 2022, irrespective of who she was playing with.

“I’m really hoping that’s back with the Titans … but once that contracting season opens up, we will see where we end up.”

The 2021 season was pushed into 2022 because of the pandemic.

The NRLW will return again in 2022, with the season commencing in the second half of the year.
