Gold Star Shaniah Power’s plan to target NRLW legend

“We know she’s one of the best players in the league right now, probably ever in the history of women’s’ league.”

Gold Stars sensation Shaniah Power plans on targeting NRLW marquee woman Ali Brigginshaw in her quest to kickstart her QRLW career on a high.

The 24-year-old overcame her disappointment at missing the Queensland competition’s inaugural clash last year to feature for the New Zealand Warriors and Maroons, and now stands as one of the highest profile players in the competition.

The ill-fated 2020 campaign gave a glimpse into the potential of the North Queensland squad, however faced with the Brigginshaw-led Valley Diehards Power has had to quickly formulate a plan of attack.

That plan is centred on Brigginshaw, and ensuring the Brisbane Broncos captain is deprived of chance to flourish.

“We know she’s one of the best players in the league right now, probably ever in the history of women’s’ league, so definitely taking every opportunity away from her in my position and getting up hard in defence to not give her space to play will be a huge thing,” Power said.

“I’ll definitely be targeting her in defence and trying to wear her down, those will be the two main things our right edge will focus on.”

Power believes any success the Gold Stars will have begins with their spine — captain and fullback Romy Teitzel, along with halves Imogen Healy and Tahlulah Tillett.

The powerhouse Bowen product has been particularly impressed by Teitzel since she assumed the captaincy, praising her ability to provide unique insights to the game.

Power believes she has evolved dramatically since before her NRLW debut last year, developing into a more mentally resilient player courtesy of her vast experiences at the elite level.

She said that would ultimately be her greatest asset when she takes the field this afternoon.

“I think I’m a completely different player from even seven months ago, before NRLW,” Power said.

“I guess I can bring a lot more to the table in terms of mental resilience and experience in that second row position.

“I think it’s my mental resilience, I’m definitely able to push myself harder and give the right communication.

“You can talk all you want, but if you don’t have the right communication on the field things can fall apart.”

The Gold Stars and Valleys will kick off at 4pm in Cairns.
