A passion for mid-20th Century vintage was the driving force behind the restoration of this glorious 1940s Queenslander in the heart of Mackay.

The outstanding renovation combines contemporary touches with the best of the original features that define Queenslander style, including VJ walls, timber floorboards, high ceilings, wide verandahs, original doors and casement windows with awnings.

Even the traditional old double cement laundry tub has been retained, while a claw-foot bath has been added to the house to build on its vintage styling.

While some art deco touches like a stunning new and bespoke leadlight skylight in the lounge and fretwork lintels keep light and air flowing through the house.

Owners Dani and Jamie Kennedy spent a year re-crafting the home from a flaking dilapidation to an urban gem.

It is the second Queenslander in Mackay that the couple have renovated.

Dani said the focus had been on quality and design.

“We just love Queenslanders,” she said. “We had a vision, and we did it!” she said.

“Years ago, things were built to last – furniture, houses.

“Modern houses, you will need to start re-doing the kitchen, bathrooms, after eight to 10 years. I’m not into that.

“Vintage classic will always have its place. This is built for sustainability.”

The couple drew on their experiences in the building and electrical sectors, and used a licensed builder to realise their dream.

The residence has had a full electrical re-wire, and sustainability features like full insulation have been added.

Old meets new with the old sleep-out opened inward to create a master bedroom with a walk-in wardrobe and ensuite.

The practical, contemporary kitchen has been modernised with bi-fold doors opening onto the verandah, and a barn-door servery window has created a flow of light, air and space between the lounge/dining area and kitchen.

Built-in storage spaces have also been added throughout the house.

“This will be a beautiful family home, the ambience is magnificent,” Dani said.

The building has been raised to meet contemporary building codes for ceiling heights, but downstairs has been left a blank slate to allow the buyer to develop the space to meet their own needs.

Selling agent and Blacks Real Estate director Peter Francis said this feature, along with a large 906sq m block, made it ideal for someone wanting to capitalise on central business district zoning, but also have a home.

“It is absolutely ideal for someone who wanted to run a home-based business, you could run almost any business you liked from the downstairs part of that house,” he said.
