Home gutted in Nebo blaze

Detectives are investigating a suspicious fire that destroyed a home and two cars at Nebo.

A Queensland Police spokeswoman said officers were calling for anyone with dashcam footage or information about the incident, that occurred on Saturday night, to come forward.

Police declared a crime scene shortly after 10pm Saturday at the site, on the corner of Baker and Water Sts and Moranbah detectives and scenes of crime officers have inspected the area.

Officers were guarding the property on Sunday as investigations into the cause of the fire continues.

In a video of the house and vehicles on fire, loud bangs and cracks can be heard.

It is understood only one person was home when the fire took hold but no one was injured in the blaze.

Adjacent neighbour Jai Bragg said a car horn going off alerted him to something going on across the road.

“I just heard a car at first, then it stopped for a second … then I heard banging going on, then a car horn went off, some yelling,” Mr Bragg said.

“I heard a female yell and by that time I was pretty concerned so I’ve come outside.”

Mr Bragg said he saw a man walking across the road “screaming down the phone” for emergency crews, adding he also called for firefighters.

“It was probably about 14-15 foot (five metres) tall over the top of the bush,” he said.

“It sounded like … fireworks for about half an hours because all the (shocks) and all the … compressed stuff in the car was exploding.”

The flames spread from the car to the home, on the corner of Baker and Water Sts, which are both now completely guttered.

Nearby residents were told to evacuate the area and an exclusion zone was in place as seven fire crews battled the fire, which it is understood to have started in a vehicle parked in a carport on from of the house.

Police, paramedics and the SES were also called to the scene.

A second vehicle can also be seen behind the property and it is understood it was damaged in the fire.

A Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokeswoman said crews were initially called to the fire about 8.05pm and when crews arrived about 9pm the house and two vehicles were up in flames.

The spokeswoman said nearby buildings were also exposed to the fire.

About seven crews, including rural, Walkerston and Mackay crews, worked to ensure adjoining properties were not affected and managed to contain the fire to the one house by 10pm.

The spokeswoman said crews performed exposure and fire protection.

A Queensland Ambulance spokeswoman said paramedics were on scene to assist firefighters but as of 10.15pm no one had needed assistance.

While firefighters worked to put out the fire, the street was cordoned off for about two blocks which was reduced once the fire was extinguished.

Police declared the site a crime scene just after 10pm Saturday and officers have been stationed, guarding the property since.

More to come.
