Marty Bella assault: Samuel Anthony Camilleri pleads not guilty over alleged attack

A man accused of running down rugby league legend and former origin great Marty Bella plans to fight the charges in what is expected to be a full-day hearing.
Samuel Anthony Camilleri pleaded not guilty in Sarina Magistrates Court to the July 15 allegations at Koumala.
Police allege there was a verbal altercation before the 54 year old deliberately drove his ute at the former star prop, who was on a quad bike.
It is alleged this occurred when Mr Bella, who is a councillor with Mackay Regional Council, came across him on a newly bought property, 60km south of Mackay.
Police further allege Mr Camilleri then sprayed a substance in Mr Bella’s eyes several times before further assaulting him.
Mr Camilleri is charged with dangerous driving on Schirmers Road and assault occasioning bodily harm against Mr Bella on July 15, 2021.
Matters were first mentioned in court on August 9 and adjourned until today when Mr Camilleri formally entered not guilty pleas to both charges.
The court heard the case is expected to take a full day.
A brief of evidence was ordered for late October and matters will be mentioned again in November. Mr Camilleri’s appearance has been excused for that date unless he changes his pleas.
The hearing has been listed for early December.
