A man has been charged following a shocking car crash in which a home was “pushed back” by 100mm, in South Mackay.
Neighbour Bob Ross said he saw the wild scenes from the front-steps of his house, describing the dual-cab 4wd “up on two wheels” as it barrelled across the road.
“The vehicle that hit the house came out of Parker St, accelerating, up onto two wheels and just straight across into the house,” he said.
“He came around the corner there so fast he was up on two wheels and veered straight into the house.
“He was still accelerating as he came across the road.”
Mr Ross said the sound was “horrendous”.
“You can’t describe it,” he said.
“The impact sound, I have been in a car crash before, it’s the same sort of impact sound.”
In the moments before the crash, Mr Ross yelled out.
“As I saw it, my wife was inside, and I just said ‘s – t’,” he said.
“I yelled out because I knew what was going to happen.
“There was no way in the world he was going to turn that corner.
“It was just an ordinary sort of family party, a bit of laughing and a bit of talk.
“So, it has sort of come out of left-field.”
After the crash, the driver allegedly left the scene.
“He got out of the car and ran down the street,” he said
It is understood the occupant of the house was not hurt in the crash and her child was away at the time.
Mr Ross said two fire trucks, an ambulance and “about six police cars” attended the scene at 11pm on November 11.
Ambulance personnel took a male in his 30s with a minor arm injury to Mackay Base Hospital for observation.
A police spokeswoman said a 40-year-old Beaconsfield man had been taken into custody.
The spokeswoman said he had been charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, failing to provide specimen of breath or blood for analysis and two counts of assault occasioning bodily harm (in relation to alleged assaults of two women aged 26 and 28).
He has been released on bail and is set to appear in Mackay Magistrates Court on November 29.
On Saturday morning, workers inspected the house and said it had suffered “significant damage” and had been pushed back about 100mm.
