A concrete labourer has been taken off the roads for four years after he broke the law for a road trip with his girlfriend to buy a puppy.

Jett William Cavell initially lost his licence on June 14 after he was caught drink-driving but continued to get behind the wheel.

The 19 year old pleaded guilty in Mackay Magistrates Court to four charges, including two counts of disqualified driving, contravening police and not complying with a notice.

Prosecutor Sergeant Hannah Beaumont said police spotted Cavell on Main St in Proserpine driving 18km over the speed limit at 9.25pm on August 27.

When asked to show his licence, police discovered the teen had been driving disqualified.

Cavell was with his girlfriend and a friend at the time, and told police they were driving to Airlie Beach “to pick up a puppy in the morning”.

He said he had thought the speed limit was 80km/h, not 60km/h.

Sergeant Beaumont said less than a week later, on September 3, Cavell was seen driving on Malcomson St in North Mackay about 5am.

He told police was driving to the Mirani Sugar Mill for work.

Magistrate Damien Dwyer admonished Cavell for his “continued disobedience of the law”.

“You were disqualified from driving for three months then you kept driving,” Mr Dwyer said.

Mr Dwyer fined Cavell $2500. He was disqualified from driving for four years and convictions were recorded.
