The man charged over allegedly causing the death of a road worker in a hit and run on Mackay’s Ron Camm Bridge allegedly escaped from police custody less than a week after his arrest.

Mackay Magistrates Court heard Tristan James Watson allegedly attempted to flee authorities in Sarina on Tuesday, November 2.

The 28-year-old appeared in court via video link on November 3 charged with allegedly escaping lawful custody and two counts of obstructing police.

The charges are atop 18 other offences Mr Watson was accused of including aggravated dangerous driving causing the death of Brendan Moreland on October 26.

Mr Watson was allegedly on a return to prison warrant at the time he struck Mr Moreland while driving a stolen car on the Bruce Highway.

He was arrested on the same day and charged on October 28.

Mr Watson is expected to appear in Mackay Magistrates Court on November 10.
