Hay Point crash: Balberra man critical after head-on collision near Mackay

A man critically injured in a head-on collision south of Mackay remains in intensive care fighting for life, as police appeal for witnesses to the harrowing crash.

A man critically injured in a serious head-on crash south of Mackay has been flown to Townsville.

The 31-year-old Balberra man was pinned inside a vehicle when it and another collided at Hay Point about 5.45pm Sunday.

He was the sole occupant of a Holden Rodeo.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services crews freed the man before he was assessed at the scene at the intersection of Hay Point and Windsor roads.

He was initially taken to Mackay Base Hospital with critical injuries before being flown to Townsville University Hospital on Tuesday.

He remains in intensive care.

A 46-year-old Sarina man, who was the sole occupant of a Mitsubishi Triton, was taken to Mackay Base Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The head-on collision shut Hay Point Rd for more than four hours.

Initial investigations indicated the vehicles were travelling in opposite directions when they collided.

The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating and are appealing for anyone with relevant dashcam footage, or who was travelling in the area, to come forward.
