A 31-year-old Balberra man has suffered critical injuries after a head-on collision south of Mackay.

The man was the sole occupant of a Holden Rodeo and he was treated at the scene before being taken to Mackay Base Hospital.

A 46-year-old Sarina man driving a Mitsubishi Triton suffered non-life threatening injuries and was taken to Mackay Base Hospital in a stable condition.

A police spokesman said preliminary information indicated the Holden and Mitsubishi were travelling in opposite directions along Hay Point Rd when they collided at about 5.45pm on Sunday, June 5.

The spokesman said the vehicles collided at the intersection of Hay Point Rd and Windsor Rd, with one man trapped inside on of them.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services crews helped gain access to the man pinned inside before he was freed and loaded into an ambulance.

Hay Point Rd was closed until just before 11pm to clear debris and clean up a fuel leak at the crash scene.

The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating the incident and the police have asked anyone with information or relevant dashcam footage in the area at the time to come forward.

The crash comes after a harrowing five months on Mackay region roads, with 17 deaths since January 1.
