An accused axe-wielding armed robber has been remanded in custody over allegations he threatened another person at their home during a brazen theft before fleeing with the weapon on a push bike.

Mackay police unleashed a manhunt after reports of the alleged terrifying armed robbery were made early Tuesday morning.

Detective acting senior sergeant Tim Heller said police would allege a 37-year-old South Mackay man had attended a West Mackay home about 8.45am looking for a particular person believed to be a former resident at the property.

It is further alleged the man started stealing tools from the address when he was disturbed by and confronted by the current resident.

“Upon being confronted by the resident it will be alleged the (man) had raised an axe that he has stolen from that address and yelled at the resident in a threatening manner,” the Mackay Criminal Investigation acting officer in charge said.

The resident retreated and called police, and police allege the defendant has left the address with the stolen tools and axe on a bicycle, Senior Sergeant Heller said.

Police commenced an investigation and identified the alleged offender.

“And as a result of some excellent police work they tracked the (alleged) offender and arrested him within hours of the offence occurring,” Senior Sergeant Heller said.

Police arrested Ernest Karl Tomarra, who appeared in Mackay Magistrates Court on Wednesday on four charges including armed robbery and possessing meth, alleged stolen items not related to the robbery and a knife.

The court heard no bail application was made because Mr Tomarra is on a return to prison warrant.

He was remanded in custody until January 10, 2023.
