A man has suffered serious head injuries following a brazen attack outside a unit block on the Mackay city fringe.

The incident occurred about 7.35pm Monday on Romeo St.

It is understood the victim had been sitting in a car on the street outside the unit block when the offenders, who were known to him, arrived looking for him.

The victim has approached the offenders, who have struck him on the head before fleeing the scene in a vehicle.

A Queensland Police Service spokeswoman said the victim, a 29-year-old man, was taken to Mackay Base Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Mackay police are investigating the incident.
