Police have revealed a man had been attempting to break up a fight between three people when he was stabbed near the ear while walking home from the Mackay city centre.

Detective Inspector Emma Novosel said police were piecing together what happened and calling for anyone with dashcam or CCTV footage, or any information about the incident to come forward.

The 48-year-old man had been walking on Carlyle St, East Mackay in the early hours on Saturday when he came across a group of people at the Alfred St intersection.

“He witnessed an altercation that was escalating between two male persons and a female,” Inspector Novosel said.

“At that time he’s tried to intervene or he’s made an attempt to intervene and told the male people to leave the female person alone.”

Inspector Novosel said not long after one of the men involved in the altercation “challenged him”.

He was involved in a short altercation where he was struck in the back of the head … “using some sort of an implement”, she said.

The victim has made his way to Domino’s on Shakespeare and gotten help. He was taken to Mackay Base Hospital.

The stabbing wound was “significant enough that he needed medical treatment at the hospital”, Inspector Novosel said.

“At this stage he’s only give a … limited description of the people that he came across,” she said, adding he had met with detectives on Monday to try and identify the people involved.

It is understood the woman has not come forward.

Inspector Novosel said at this stage it was unknown what sparked the initial altercation between the two men and woman.

She said police were working with home and business owners in the area to collect CCTV footage.

“And we’re also asking any members of the public who may have dashcam or any CCTV capability in that area … could they contact police,” she said.

“Whenever there’s personal violence used against a member of the community who’s making their way home, especially when there’s allegations of some sort of a weapon it is a concern.

“That’s why we’re seeking assistance.”
