A croc sighting just minutes away from the entryway to the Pioneer River has sparked an investigation by the government authorities.

On January 5, 2025 there were two reports of a crocodile inside the wall at the Mackay Harbour, following a sighting in the area the day before.

Mackay man Avano Ferrerii was at the harbour wall at around 4.20pm on January 5 when he spotted a 2.3m crocodile coming into the bay.

He captured several photos and one video of what appears to be a small crocodile swimming in the water.

A larger croc was also spotted in the Pioneer River near Riverside Dr, Cremorne just days earlier on December 31, 2024.

“The report said the crocodile surfaced around fifteen metres from the rock wall before disappearing, then resurfaced closer to the rock wall,” a DESI spokesperson said.

“We are investigating the crocodile sighting reports, and we thank the members of the public for making those reports.”

The spokesperson said that no water body in “Croc Country” can be considered to be free of crocodiles and urged the public to be “CrocWise” by adhering to the following guidelines:

  • Expect crocodiles in all waterways even if there is no warning sign
  • Obey all warning signs – they are there to keep you safe
  • Be aware crocs also swim in the ocean and be extra cautious around water at night
  • Stay well away from crocodile traps – that includes when fishing and boating
  • Stand back from the water’s edge when fishing and don’t wade in to retrieve a lure
  • Camp as far back from the edge of the water as possible
  • Never leave food, fish scraps or bait near the water, at camp sites or at boat ramps
  • Never provoke, harass, or feed crocs
  • Always supervise children near the water and keep pets on a lead.
