A night of heavy rain in North Mackay may have flooded one popular football oval, but that did not stop the region’s youth from finding a new way to have some fun on the field.

After more than 120mm of rainfall in Mackay overnight, one sports club had its fields transformed into a playground.
The Mackay Wanderers Football Club soccer fields were totally inundated by rain this morning.
Mackay man Tony Fitzgerald was walking his dog in the area early enough to see the entire field covered in water, but by 11.40am the water had receded, leaving behind huge puddles which attracted a group of local children brandishing boogie boards.
Mackay Wanderers Football Club president Greg Kliese said the club’s fields flooded on average three or four times a year.
“We try to keep on top of the mowing of the fields and make sure that any damage is repaired as soon as possible,” Mr Kliese said.
The weather has so far affected some pre-season training, but the flooding was all standard and it’s expected the club will be able to access the fields again soon.
“If we had a wet winter then this creates problems with access as the fields don’t dry out and recover,” Mr Kliese said.
