Emergency services have worked to free a driver who impaled his car on irrigation pipes in a cane field.
A Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman said crews were called to the scene along the Bruce Highway at the intersection of Farleigh-Habana Rd at 1.10pm.
Senior Constable Michael Parker from the Forensic Crash Unit said a 47-year-old man was travelling south on the Bruce Highway “for reasons still currently unknown and under investigation”.
“He has left the roadway surface and travelled for an extended period through a grassy verge,” he said.
“Into a cane paddock and hit a number of irrigations pipeworts directly through the windshield.
“He has sustained serious injuries in the incident.
“I believe he has a head strike and an injury to his right arm.”
Senior Constable Parker thanked emergency services and members of the public who stopped to help.
Members of the police and fire rescue worked together to remove the irrigation pipes lodged in the vehicle.
It is understood a breath test may have been administered to the driver.
The Queensland Ambulance spokeswoman said the male driver was trapped in the vehicle but was conscious, breathing and in a stable condition.
The man was transported to Mackay Base Hospital for further treatment.
Police encouraged any persons with dashcam footage of the incident to share it with authorities.
