Anytime Fitness – Northern Beaches
It’s fitness central at Northern Beaches as yet another gym arrives in the bustling region.
Anytime Fitness, which left Mackay in 2020 with a “heavy heart”, is making a comeback and has released a sneak peek video on Facebook showing inside its new gym.
Located in Rural View, the modern facilities feature tall ceilings and functional zones including lifting racks, a large stretching and free weights floor, and cardio.
The business posted to Facebook that it would open in less than a month.
“We can’t wait to welcome you all through the door,” it said.
F45 – Mackay North
World leaders in the F45 gym franchise are extending their Mackay roots with the opening of their second store at the Northern Beaches.
Owners Lee and Kim Renshaw opened their first location in the Mackay CBD five years ago and are now looking for a studio manager, head trainer and trainer to complete the outfit of their new gym.
Situated in Rural View, the gym had its opening weekend on Sunday.
Nextra Giftware – Mount Pleasant Centre
Gillian Ross runs Nextra Giftware with her husband Troy and said it had gone “gangbusters” since opening last week.
The giftware space is an add-on to the existing newsagent and Mrs Ross said demand from customers pushed them to expand.
“We opened this extension to try and fill the niche that was missing in Mackay,” she said.
The shop, which follows the same opening hours as the original newsagent, sells homeware and fashion products.
“It has gone absolutely gangbusters,” Mrs Ross said.
“It has blown us away.”
Mirrored Memories
Emily Bennett and her partner Ryan Pritchard have started a new photo booth business.
The photo booth is the first of its kind in Mackay, offering people an interactive experience.
The touch screen display hosts a range of features such as games, filters, animations and the ability to send pictures directly to a device, which means the photos can be swiftly uploaded to social media.
“We have the option of personalising everything,” Ms Bennett said.
The business opened in early October and the pair deploy to locations and events across the region.
Knogins – Caneland Central
The popular brand that sells snapback hats and accessories for kids and toddlers has just opened up a shop front at Caneland.
Located near Cotton On and OPSM on the ground level, the brand prides itself on offering sun protection for kids with style.
Bohemian Elyse Kids Play – Sydney St
This new playspace for kids is an add-on to the popular coffee shop on Sydney St.
Owner Tori Day, 24, was inspired to build out the extension from her own memories of a similar playspace she enjoyed as a child in Rockhampton.
“It is something Mackay currently doesn’t have, a lot of interactive toys,” she said.
“I grew up in Rockhampton and there is a similar sort of thing there I used to play in when I was a child.
“I moved to Mackay when I was 14 and there has been nothing like that here.”
The space holds softball and interactive play equipment.
It also holds room for mums and dads to have a coffee while they watch their kids play.
Entry for a child is $3 or $5 per family.
HMB Barbers – Mount Pleasant Centre
HMB Barbers boasts branches all over Queensland and Mount Pleasant is the company’s newest venture.
The barbershop opened up last week and blokes looking for a cut or a shave are greeted with the offer of a beer when they walk in.
The website states a signature haircut goes for $44 while a beard trim and shave goes for $30.
Primary school kids can get a haircut for $30 and university students and high schoolers can get a cut for $36.
Upstaged By Steph – North Mackay
Stephanie Burgess has just opened a new upcycling and design business in North Mackay.
Located on 12 Valley St, Mrs Burgess collects material from garage sales, marketplaces, op shops and recycling centres and sets to work creating new products.
“My focus is on upcycling,” she said.
“I love transforming things.
“I think there was a need in Mackay for something different.
“Somewhere for people to go that don’t necessarily want the same old same old.”
Her Facebook page shows how she transformed an old vintage lamp frame into an elegant light source.
Mrs Burgess works on everything from furniture to bicycles.
Catalog – Mount Pleasant Centre
Mackay fashionistas have a new outlet to browse with the opening of a Catalog branch at Mount Pleasant Centre.
Mackay now joins Cairns, Townsville, Rockhampton and South East Queensland to host Catalog’s take on ladies’ fashion.
Wonderful Massage Mackay – Caneland Central
If you are feeling a little sore this new massage business might be for you.
It offers customers remedial massage, deep tissue massage, relaxation massage and traditional Chinese treatments such as ear candling and cupping.
A 25-minute neck and shoulder massage is priced at $45, while a 45-minute hot stone massage is priced at $100.
A 60-minute whole body massage is priced at $95.
Zambrero – Northern Beaches
The Northern Beaches now has two Mexican options after the Burrito Bar opened in the past year and now Zambrero just a block away.
Nine years after opening the first Zambrero in Mackay, Peter and Deb Quinn are opening their first drive through in Rural View just off Mackay Bucasia Rd.
Like Zambrero’s founder Sam Prince, the Quinns are passionate about making good food and supporting their community.
The Mexican fast-food joint at 39-43 Arana Dr, Rural View will have a children’s playground as well as the drive-through option.
The Quinns developed their first outlet at Caneland Central in 2013 which was followed with their Gordon St store in 2014.
Yet a north side store has been in the works for six years as proposed locations fell through.
A more than 2m live counter on the wall shows the number of meals provided for those in need by Zambrero’s Plate 4 Plate initiative.
“Every time you buy a burrito or bowl in any of our stores, we donate a plate of food,” Mr Quinn said.
“People can sit here and that ticks over one by one by one.
“I went to the communities in Johannesburg, South Africa, and helped cook the meals to feed the kids.
“It was pretty special.”
The T House – Mount Pleasant Centre
This new Vietnamese cuisine offering is expected to come to the Mount Pleasant Centre in the coming weeks.
The owners could not be contacted for details by the time this article was published.
