Shocking: Alleged thief rummages through car

Cars are the prime target for petty crims, with more than 700 cars from across the Ipswich district in the past year.

Queensland Police statistics report an overwhelming majority of vehicle thefts which happened between October 2020 and October 2021 occurred in Goodna and was closely followed by Redbank Plains.

Most of the crimes occurred in the dead of night at 12am.

Over 50 cars were stolen in just the past four weeks.

An Ipswich police spokeswoman said a large majority of the cars being stolen were as a result of ‘sneak breaks,’ which is when an offender commits a crime with the help of an unlocked door or window.

“The biggest issue at the moment is residents are leaving their keys in a place that can be easily accessed,” she said.

“Police are urging residents to secure their homes, vehicles and all equipment to avoid opportunistic thefts.

“Car owners should ensure their vehicle is always locked and secured, with any valuables including cash, electronics and handbags out of sight.”

The spokeswoman said the cars were generally stolen for a multitude of reasons by a variety of offenders, not just juveniles.

“There’s no pattern to these crimes, they are mostly opportunistic,” she said.

“They can be used for hooning or committing other crimes.
