A recidivist property offender who returned to stealing cars and breaking into homes a month after he was released on probation has been jailed.
Kyle James Easton was released from prison on a probation order in December 2024, and by January, he was on a crime spree across South East Queensland.
When he was sentenced before the Toowoomba Magistrates Court on Tuesday, July 15, police prosecutor Kinsley Weir said the crimes occurred between Oakey and Brisbane, and ended a month or so later when police executed a search warrant for Easton.
She said during the crime spree, Easton left his blood inside cars and homes, with officers obtaining a number of positive DNA matches.
The first of which occurred in Kedron, where $2800 worth of tools was stolen from a ute, after Easton smashed his way through a glass window.
Ms Weir said Easton then stole a car, which was used during a subsequent crime spree, where he broke into a plumbing and electrical business in Toowoomba and took off with copper wire and tools.
She said he went on to steal other cars, break into other premises, and was found with a number of stolen registration plates.
The offending came to an end when police obtained and executed a search warrant at an Oakey residence on February 4.
Ms Weir said Easton was found with cannabis and meth, and a search of his phone showed he had also supplied drugs.
Ms Weir noted there was a dated offence before the court from late 2023 where Easton’s blood was found inside a Wallumbilla home that he ransacked after stealing a car from Warwick.
Solicitor Claire Graham told the court Easton, who had a disadvantaged upbringing, returned to offending after he was released from jail because he began associating with other criminals.
She said the young man’s criminal history aligned with his longstanding meth addiction, which he began using when he was homeless.
Easton pleaded guilty to more than 20 charges via video link, which included supplying drugs, possessing meth and cannabis, breaking into premises and cars, stealing cars, stealing tools and stealing copper wire.
Easton was sentenced to a 12-month jail term, and the 162 days he spent in custody were declared as time served.
