An unsupervised learner driver’s reckless burnout in a Logan car park, where he almost struck a toddler while on the wrong side of the road, has seen him face court.

Footage played to Beenleigh Magistrates Court on Tuesday, July 25 showed Kai Dakota Reglin doing a burnout at the Browns Plains Grand Plaza car park.

The 22-year-old Tanah Merah man, who currently resides in Ipswich, then accelerated on the wrong side of the road and almost struck a man carrying a toddler in his arms as he walked beside a woman carrying a baby.

The court heard Reglin was on his learner’s drivers licence and was unsupervised during the March 18, 2022 offence.

He pleaded guilty to dangerous operation of a vehicle.

On July 17, 2022 Reglin also stole an electric wheelchair and tried to sell it on Facebook Marketplace, the court heard.

In February of this year he was found by police in possession of 214g of cannabis, a firearm and a knife.

The court heard the gun was disassembled into separate parts, in clip seal bags when police discovered it.

For those offences, the roofer and labourer pleaded guilty to possession of dangerous drugs, unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a knife in a public place.

Defence lawyer Nicole Conlan from Howden Saggers Lawyers said her client had a good work history and was remorseful for his behaviour.

“Mr Reglin has a very good relationship with his mother, who has provided a letter of support and he is extremely remorseful for his offending,” she said.

“He has been gainfully employed in glass construction, roofing, landscaping and completed a certificate three in horticulture.”

Magistrate Terry Duroux strongly condoned Reglin’s reckless behaviour.

“You were driving like an absolute lunatic, doing a burnout then going on to the opposite end of the road,” he said.

“You shouldn’t have been driving anyway as a learner, It’s an outrageous offence and you passed within a metre of a toddler.”

Reglin was fined $1050 and his drivers licence was disqualified for seven months.

He was sentenced to a probation order and no conviction was recorded.
