Service station evacuated, road closed after fuel tank bursts on Brisbane Valley Highway, Fernvale

A service station has been evacuated and delays of up to seven hours are expected after a fully loaded fuel tank burst at a petrol station on the Brisbane Valley Highway in Fernvale.

UPDATE: Police have revoked an earlier emergency declaration under the Public Safety Preservation Act following a fuel leak at Fernvale. 

One lane of the Brisbane Valley Highway near the service station has now been opened with delays expected.

Police are urging motorists to avoid the Brisbane Valley Highway at Fernvale and to expect delays of up to seven hours following a fuel leak.

A Queensland Police Service spokeswoman said a fully-loaded fuel tank had burst at about 10am and was leaking fuel on to the tarmac at a service station.

She said the tank contained 8000 litres of fuel.

A 500 metre exclusion zone has been set up and diversions are in place at Forest Hill Fernvale Road to Glanmorgan Vale Road.

The spokeswoman said the service station had been evacuated and the Fernvale Country Markets and a nearby pie shop were blocked off.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Service and ambulance crews were also on scene with police.

Drivers are being urged to avoid the area and to expect long delays of up seven hours as the fuel evaporates.

The spokeswoman said there was no fire and nobody had been injured.
