A beloved Ipswich high-school music teacher and country musician with three albums to his name has been charged with indecent treatment of a child under the age of 16.

North Ipswich man Morgan John Hann, 37, a Bremer State High School music teacher and member of alt-country band Suicide Swans, appeared in Ipswich Magistrates Court on Wednesday charged with a single count of indecent treatment of a child under the age of 16.

Defence solicitor David Chambers told the court his client would be pleading guilty to the offence.

An indictment will now be presented to the District Court with the sentence to follow at a future date.

Further counts of grooming a child and possessing child exploitation material were discontinued by the prosecution.

It’s understood the indecent treatment, which occurred on an unknown date between June 9 and June 15, 2019 at Ipswich, was not committed against a Bremer SHS student.

The child’s gender or exact age is not known, although they were at least 12 years old at the commission of the offence.

Mr Hann’s bail was enlarged on its existing conditions.

The Queensland Times understands Mr Hann has been engaged as a music teacher at Bremer SHS since at least 2018, with the Queensland College of Teachers suspending his registration from December 5, 2019, the day after he was charged with the offence.

In social media posts dating back to late-2017, he was referred to as a “friend” of the school.

Mr Hann is also a multi-instrumentalist and vocalist with popular alt-country band Suicide Swans, which has released three studio albums.

The Queensland Times has applied to the Ipswich Courthouse to inspect Mr Hann’s file but was told there would be a 24-48 hour wait while necessary redactions were made to protect the identity of the child victim.

Bremer SHS and the Department of Education were contacted for comment.
