As the Omicron variant sweeps across Ipswich infecting at least 5860 residents, one Ipswich suburb has become a local hotspot.

Last week Redbank Plains recorded the fastest growing number of cases compared to any other Queensland suburb which has now risen from 428 to over 1000 cases.

Springfield Lakes has 126, Goodna has 119, and the fast growing suburb of Ripley has 102 cases.

Goodna rose from 119 to 406 positive cases and Ripley jumped from 102 to 336 cases.

On Thursday January 13, Queensland recorded 14,914 new cases and the state’s Covid-related death toll tragically doubled to 12 following the death of six people aged between 70 and 90-years-old.

There are 26 Queenslanders in intensive care and 10 on ventilators.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said it was a very sad day for Queensland.

“To lose six in one day is a big shock,” she said.

“I think this would be a very difficult time for families at the moment.”

Although the West Moreton Health executive response lead and CEO Matthew Tallis said no Ipswich residents were currently in ICU with Covid-19.

“We will continue to modify our services as case numbers increase over coming weeks,” he said.

“Ipswich Hospital currently has three wards dedicated to the treatment of COVID-19 patients.”

Mr Tallis said a number of staff members who tested positive have been furloughed.

“We would like to remind the community that emergency departments are for people who are critically unwell,” he said.

“People with mild COVID-19 symptoms who are able to recover at home (and) should not present to an emergency department.”
