Ipswich recorded 4196 positive Covid-19 cases although Queensland’s fastest growing local government area is yet to echo the state government’s 90 per cent vaccination target.
As of January 9, 89.8 per cent of residents received their second dose of the vaccine although 94.1 per cent had had their first jab.
According to Queensland Health, 169,205 people reside in Ipswich’s local government area.
Residents are still turning up in droves to be vaccinated with just under 1000 residents receiving their jab at the community clinic at Ipswich’s CBD on Monday.
On Tuesday, January 11, cases across Ipswich rose by 586 positive cases which is up from 268 cases the previous day.
State wide 20,566 cases of Covid-19 were recorded overnight and tragically a 70-year-old who suffered from significant medical issued died after contracting the virus.
As the Ipswich Hospital attempts to keep up with an influx of patients West Moreton Health executive response lead and CEO Matthew Tallis said the hospital is continuously reviewing and changing their approach.
“We will continue to modify our services as case numbers increase over coming weeks,” he said.
“Ipswich Hospital currently has three wards dedicated to the treatment of COVID-19 patients.
“Currently there are no COVID-19 patients requiring care in our Intensive Care Unit.”
Mr Tallis said a number of staff members who tested positive have been furloughed.
“We would like to remind the community that emergency departments are for people who are critically unwell,” he said.
“People with mild COVID-19 symptoms who are able to recover at home, should not present to an emergency department.”
When asked how many staff members were off sick, and how many positive Covid cases where being treated at Ipswich Hospital the West Moreton Health spokeswoman declined to answer the questions.
