Man suffers severe concussion, possible heart attack after alleged king hit at Springfield Tavern

A woman has recounted the scary moment her partner came home from the pub covered in blood and suffering chest pain following an alleged coward punch at Springfield on the weekend.

Stop the Coward Punch

A woman has recounted the scary moment her partner came home from the pub “covered in blood” after he was allegedly king hit in the back of the head by a man he was due to start a new job with just days later.

The woman, who wished to remain anonymous, said her partner, aged 49, was allegedly attacked by another man at the Springfield Tavern at about 2pm on Saturday, December 4.

An alleged “coward punch” left her partner with cuts, a serious concussion, blurred eyesight and severe chest pain.

She said the incident happened after the alleged attacker’s girlfriend had “mouthed off” and the victim said something back to her.

“Then it was all over,” she said.

The man’s partner said there was an “altercation” before a “massive bloke” allegedly turned around and threw a punch to the back of her partner’s head.

“Bang, out of nowhere came this horrendous punch,” she said.

The alleged victim was sitting on a bar stool when he was hit and he fell to the ground and suffered a blood nose, cut lip, cuts, scratches and a nasty concussion.

The woman, who was at their house at the time, said another man drove her partner home and she saw him covered in blood.

Police attended their house but the man began to deteriorate and suffered severe chest pain so an ambulance was called.

“On the way to hospital something went wrong … they had to pull over and get another one of those heart doctors to tend to him on the side of the road in the ambulance, it was absolutely horrendous,” she said.

“They’re not sure if he’s had an angina attack or something.”

“They had him hooked up to machines and everything all night, he was taken to Ipswich Hospital.

“(He’s) very healthy, he’s only 49, so he’s healthy and well and got no heart problems or anything.

“He can hardly walk, his back’s been done, his neck has gone and his leg.

“This is all from one of those coward punches to the back of his head, he didn’t see it coming, didn’t know, nothing.”

She said he was released from hospital on Sunday and would need to undergo further tests and scans.

She said the concussion had also affected his eyesight which was still not back to normal on Wednesday.

“He’s not in a good way, he can’t work,” she said.

“He was due to start a brand new job at the attacker’s premises on Monday … he was due to start a new job worth just under $100,000 so that’s no longer.

“It was dreadful.”

The woman said her partner had known the alleged attacker for a couple of months but they had not been at the Tavern together.

The alleged victim had to be driven home by another man after the Tavern allegedly kicked him out when he came to.

She said the alleged attacker was in his 60s and would be about 110kgs.

A Queensland Police Service spokeswoman said police were investigating

“Springfield Police are investigating allegations of assault to a man and a woman by a patron of the Springfield Tavern on December 4,” she said.

“Investigations into the incident are ongoing at this time.”
