Ipswich streets to avoid break-ins car thefts, assaults or murder

How safe is Ipswich? New data has revealed the streets and suburbs where police have been called for break-ins, assaults, drugs, car thefts and even murder over the past year. Check out Ipswich’s 40 worst crime riddled streets on our map.

Don’t leave your car unlocked at shops in Goodna, Springfield or Ipswich CBD and make sure you lock up at home if you live in those suburbs.

That was the message from police after the latest QPS data revealed the three police divisions as top crime hotspots in Ipswich over the past year to October.

Home invasions, break-ins, car thefts, assaults and even recorded murder offences were all on the rise over the year with the total number of crimes across Ipswich up by nearly 1 per cent for the year to October.

Data released this month on the QPS website revealed there were 19,933 offences recorded in the local government area of Ipswich, compared to 19,741 offences for the same period last year.

The city, which is 40km west of Brisbane, recorded two murder offences in the year to October, on a par with the number recorded the previous year.

However, the statistics showed an alarming 39 per cent rise in assaults in Ipswich police district over the year with police recording 3756 cases, up from 2700 the previous year.

Ipswich’s most violent streets were in and around the hospital, the magistrates court, police station and civic centre.

Ellenborough St, near Limestone St, recorded 16 assaults over the year, making it the city’s most violent place after Borallon Correctional Centre where there were 28 assault offences recorded.

This year, the city known for its gracious Queenslander homes, had two suburbs listed in the top 10 QPS districts for the most number of assaults over the past year to October.

Its Goodna police division recorded the fourth highest number of assault offences across the state with 1076 to the beginning of October.

The inner-city police division of Ipswich recorded 881 assaults for the same period.

Both were behind Cairns district with 2667 assaults and Logan Central with 1499.

Home invasions and break-ins were also on the rise, with 1863 in Ipswich District in the year to October, up 18 per cent on the same time in the previous year.

The worst Ipswich police division for home break-ins was Goodna, where there were 414 unlawful entries with 388 in the CBD and 344 in Springfield.

Hooper St in West Ipswich, which is home to a motorcycle shop, fast food outlets and a petrol station, chalked up seven break-ins and unlawful entries over the year, the most across the city.

It also had one of the highest car theft rates over the year, with three vehicles stolen from various premises.

Data for car thefts in the Ipswich QPS district showed 912 vehicles were stolen over the year to October, which was a 17.5 per cent rise from the previous year.

The most number of car thefts were in Goodna, Ipswich and Springfield police divisions.

Goodna recorded 240 and was ranked 22nd in the state for the year, trailing Cairns which recorded 724 car thefts, the state’s highest number.

QPS statistics showed that streets around the Riverlink Shopping Centre at North Ipswich were hotspots for car thefts with three vehicles stolen from the area in the year.
