Queensland border restrictions have been dropped as the state’s Covid-19 cases continue to climb, with Ipswich recording almost 1800 positive tests in two days.

As of Saturday, the Ipswich region has recorded a total of 7636 cases, up from 5860 on Thursday.

Of the cases, 7493 remain under investigation.

Suburbs including Redbank Plains and Springfield remain hot spots for infections as the virus continues to sweep through the region.

Yesterday there were 749 vaccine doses administered at the Ipswich CBD Community Based Vaccination Clinic.

It comes as the state recorded 19,709 cases in the past 24 hours, and sadly, six more deaths.

A person in their 20s was among those who passed away, as well as a person in their 70s, two in their 80s and two in their 90s.

Speaking at a press conference at the Kippa Ring vaccination hub on Saturday, chief health officer Dr John Gerrard said all the people who had passed away had been fully vaccinated and had significant underlying health conditions.

He said the number of hospitalisations across the state had grown by 10 per cent, with 649 people now in hospital, 46 in the ICU.

“There is a good chance this is the start of our final surge … before we reach our peak,” he said.

“Now as we are approaching the peak, if you have flu like symptoms it is likely you have Covid-19.”

On Saturday the state’s border restrictions came to an end, and as of 1am anyone entering Queensland no longer needs to show a border pass or negative test result.
