A new wave of captains is about to shake up southeast Queensland schools, with a list of fresh ambitions and stack of energy.
Their great ideas span from organising fundraising and assigning new chess club captains to environmental campaigns.
Others will be facing their fear of public speaking and challenging themselves to be the best school representatives they can be.
With such bright sparks at the helm, there’s no doubt 2024 will be filled with boundless possibilities as these young captains do their classmates proud.

What are you required to do as school captain?
School captains are given many responsibilities such as being a role model to other students, especially demonstrating how to be respectful to others. This approach makes students not only feel valued but also creates a sense of belonging, building confidence to be themselves whilst feeling safe.
What one thing do you want to achieve for your school this year?
I would like to implement a peer mentorship program to support same age and younger students in their learning journey as I believe this approach will assist in letting students experience success.

The best part about being a school captain is taking responsibility of the role and presenting in assembly, whilst also leading my school.
What are you required to do as school captain?
As a school captain I am required to represent the school at many events, for example at assemblies, and at outside community events. I am also required to be a 5 STAR role model and show the Brightwater STAR values by being a respectful and kind.

I would like to be remembered as being an amazing school captain. I would like to lead our school at many events and competitions, so everyone sees and hears what a great school Brightwater State School is.

What is the most exciting thing about being a school captain?
All the possibilities and opportunities to spread kindness! Ever since I was in Prep and I met my buddy who was the school captain at the time, I always dreamed that one day it would be me. I am proud that my peers and teachers believe that I will make our school and community proud, and that my kindness and inclusivity will inspire other people to try their best and make our school even more amazing.
What are you required to do as school captain?
As School Captain, it is my job to make sure that I lead by example and encourage others to follow the 5-STAR Brightwater School values. I am excited to listen to everyone’s ideas and try to make our school even more inclusive and enjoyable for everyone.
What one thing do you want to achieve for your school this year?
We are really lucky at Brightwater to have plenty of lunchtime clubs and opportunities to do robotics, arts, choir and music, but when it’s been raining, we are limited with what we can do outside due to having grass netball and basketball courts, and it being unsafe to play. My fundraising goal is to work with our amazing community and P&C to raise money for hard surface netball and basketball courts, so that our school teams can train even if it’s been raining, and for kids to have access to these courts all the time to play fun lunchtime games and get everyone up and moving.

I am excited about being a responsible role model to all the other students at Brightwater State School. I am excited to be taking on a such big role in our amazing school.
What are you required to do as school captain?
I am required to be in full school uniform and come to school every day. I am approachable and like to help other students and always aim to be the best role model I can be by being a safe, thoughtful, active learner and responsible leader.
What one thing do you want to achieve for your school this year?
To pay it forward to our Brightwater community and show that I care. I will represent the school team by sharing new ideas and always act in the best interest of students, staff, and visitors.

Being a Year 6 school captain is exciting because I get to take on leadership responsibilities and serve as a role model to my fellow peers. I really enjoy having the opportunity to watch other students succeed academically and in sports.

The fact that I get to help people make some great primary school memories to look back on is great. I’m also excited that I get to help plan activities and work with an amazing team at the school.

There is also an opportunity to come up with new ideas to help the school be a better place.
What one thing do you want to achieve for your school this year?
I would like to leave knowing that I’ve had a great year, contributed some great ideas and made our school a better place. I would also like to plan some new events with my team that if successful become annual events. One idea, is to engage with a local retirement facility and create a day where Grade 6 students get to meet, greet and exchange life experiences. This has been successfully done in other countries and I think this would be very beneficial for our Grade 6 students and retirees.

What one thing do you want to achieve for your school this year?
As school captain, I want to create a stronger connection between the senior students and the younger students. I plan to organise fun, bonding events such as a school-wide game of tag. I am looking forward to playing a part in creating a strong sense of community at Brookfield.

I think the most exciting thing about being a school captain is knowing that I get to lead my school my school with amazing people who truly love our school. I also think getting to do all of these amazing things such as being in this newspaper is very exciting.
What are you required to do as school captain?
As school captain I am required to embrace with our community to show them how we can act positively to make improvements to our school for everyone. I can demonstrate and show students by making good learning choices, that they could be a school captain one day too! I also need to help whenever I can, being school captain is a big responsibility as well, so I also need to be ready whenever I can.
What one thing do you want to achieve for your school this year?
I would like to see what the students of our school would like to be upgraded, and then therefore upgrade these things. I can do this by holding various different fundraisers to provide the money for these upgrades.

I think the most exciting thing about being a vice-captain is taking on a bundle of responsibility and being able to take on the role of a vice. Another exciting thing about being a vice captain is you get to work with an exquisite team that supports you and appreciates you.

I am excited about being a Junior Grammar School Captain because I get to have the privilege to lead the School and to be a role model for my peers. I love the sense of community at School. Being able to come together to form ideas and resolve problems is very important to me.

As School Captain I prioritise constantly demonstrating the School values, regardless of what I am doing. Junior Grammar Captains also host Parade and other special School events, and are Chairs of the Student Council. We represent the School at important community events, and are ambassadors for our School within the broader community.

I am required to be a role model and attend fortnightly meetings. I also must run assemblies with my fellow leaders, represent my school in public events and contribute good ideas to our meetings.
What one thing do you want to achieve for your school this year?
This year I want to focus on empathy and listening in our school. I want to help set up a routine with the student leaders in which they are there to help students if they need it. We’ll wear purple vests and walk around and if someone wants advice, help, or are sad/lonely, they can come to us. I hope that this will make the school community be at its best and help to keep peace and resolve conflict.

One of the most exciting aspects of being a school captain is that I get to practice public speaking in front of hundreds of people and represent my school at many different events.
What are you required to do as school captain?
As a school captain, I have a few responsibilities. A few examples include talking at every school assembly, representing KSSS at important functions, meetings every fortnight and always setting an example.
What is one thing you want to achieve for your school this year?
One of my ideas that I would like to implement in my school is to organize a new debating club which many students seem interested in. Students can come to the debating club at lunch every week to develop their debating abilities and learn many important skills (such as critical thinking, presentation), while having fun.

I can help the school, community and students achieve their best. Helping is so exciting and I can’t wait to get started. I have some brilliant ideas and I am grateful for the opportunity to make a difference at Kenmore South State School.
What are you required to do as school captain?
As a school captain I need to set a good example to younger students. This includes being kind, respectful, responsible, safe and helpful. Being a leader is not just a badge and I have to work continuously to help the school. I’ve volunteered to help at our tuckshop. This is an example of where I need to take out part of my time to help the school, and that is what a good leader should do. Be committed, be a role model and be a leader.
What is the one thing do you want to achieve for your school this year?
This year, I would like to raise funds to improve the facilities at school. Specifically installing cold and filtrated water bubblers. Not only that but I want to improve the learning experience of students from prep to grade six. This school is incredible, but it can always be improved. School should be a safe, fun and an educational place. That is my goal for 2024.

I am responsible for organising sporting activities at school. I am able to teach others skills before Gala days and be supportive. I am involved in special school events such as our ANZAC Day Dawn Service.

As well as being required to represent our school at events such as: leading our school at ANZAC Marches, helping out with school events, and helping out all the juniors at Under 8’s day. We either help with a stall, or lead around a small group of kids. I really enjoy it!
