An Ipswich IT director who allegedly created false identities to sign over more than 400 traffic infringements has made another bid for freedom following a series of failed bail applications.
Anthony Onyeka Okeke, owner-director of the now closed Compu-Service-X Pty Ltd, is on remand for 117 charges relating to dishonesty, fraud and theft offences.
The Nigerian-Australian, who resided in Springfield Lakes on a now-expired visa, committed the alleged offences between January 11, 2017 and February 20, 2019.
In this time, Mr Okeke allegedly created fraudulent identities for Nigerian nationals in order to sign over a massive 436 traffic infringement notices totalling $199,000, the Ipswich District Court heard in September last year.
Mr Okeke has made five bail applications since his arrest in February 2019, all of which were refused in either the Ipswich District Court or the Brisbane Supreme Court.
The alleged fraudster’s latest bail application was refused by Justice Kelly and Mr Okeke last month attempted to appeal the decision.
According to court documents published in December, Mr Okeke was in Australia on a visa which had since expired, and if he were to be released on bail he could be taken into Immigration Detention and could apply for a “speedy” deportation.
Mr Okeke however submitted that was not the case that he could go immediately into Immigration Detention, but rather he would be interviewed in “due course” by an Immigration Officer with a view to determining whether a further visa would be granted to him to permit him to remain in the community, or whether some other course would be followed.
Brisbane Supreme Court Justices Walter Sofronoff, Debra Mullins and Phillip Morrison upheld Justice Kelly’s decision to refuse Mr Okeke’s bail.
The appeal was dismissed and Mr Okeke is due to stand trial in Ipswich on January 31.
