Investigations continue into what caused the tragic accident at Kilkivan on Friday night that has left a 31-year-old Sexton woman dead.

Sergeant Hans Van Kempen of the Kilkivan police station said investigations were ongoing.

The crash occurred on a bend just inside the 60km/h zone on the Gympie side of Kilkivan about 2.20am on Saturday.

Police were alerted to the incident by the occupant of a Kilkivan home out front of the which the horror unfolded.

The Rav4 veered off the Wide Bay Highway just after the 100km/h zone becomes a 60km/h zone in the township, crashing into a large gum tree near the side of the road and exploding into flames.

The driver was the only occupant of the car. She died at the scene.

The Forensic Crash Unit is appealing for witnesses, or anyone with more information on the incident, to contact them.

One motorist who drove past the scene several hours later said police and fire fighters were still there about 6.30am.

“The only thing left was a burnt out shell of the car. There didn‘t appear to be any scratch marks on the road, which seems like the lady has hit the tree at full force.
