Truckie who blew more than 3 times limit after highway crash faces court

The 53-year-old truckie and a young father who refused to be breath tested were two of several drivers to be convicted in a busy day for the Gympie Magistrates Court

A truck driver involved in a crash on the Bruce Highway near Gympie blew more than three times the limit when tested at the scene, Gympie Magistrates Court heard on Thursday.

Anthony John Towells, 53, had a blood alcohol content of 0.175 when he was breath tested by police on April 30, 2021.

The court heard Towells, who was driving a heavy vehicle to pick up a piece of machinery for his job, became involved in the crash with a rental removal truck after its driver tried to overtake his vehicle.

He was fined $1300 and disqualified from driving for 13 months.

In a separate matter, Michael John Matthews, 38, refused to take a breath tested when asked by police on April 4, 2021.

His car was found stationary in the right hand lane of Cartwright Road, with the key still in the ignition, the court heard.

Matthews was in the passenger seat when police arrived, his partner allegedly leaving the scene some time earlier.

The father-of-two was fined $1800, and disqualified from driving for 18 months.

Lashae Dee Tattam, 30, blew 0.072 during a random breath test on the Bruce Highway at Federal on April 23.

She was fined $300 and disqualified from driving for one month.

Theresa Kate Wickerson, 48, blew 0.06 when police pulled her over in Tozer Street on April 26.

She was fined $275 and disqualified from driving for one month.

P-plater Aaron John Woodruff, 19, blew 0.044 when he was pulled over for random breath testing in Hein Street in Gympie on April 30.

He was fined $300 and disqualified from driving for three months.
