Popular Gympie businesswomen Jodi Allen and Nic Millard up for AusMumpreneur awards

Nominee was inspired to start an online blog 10 years ago after she was made redundant from her job while pregnant with her second child, while she and her husband were also in the middle of building their own home.

Popular Gympie businesswomen Jody Allen and Nic Millard, both of online powerhouse Stay at Home Mum, have been named as finalists for the 2021 AusMumpreneur Awards.

The pair have picked up nominations in the Author Award (QLD/NT) and Remote and Rural Business Award (QLD/NT) categories, with judging to take place later this month before winners are announced at the online 2021 AusMumpreneur Awards in September.

Stay at Home Mum was conceptualised by Mrs Allen from her kitchen benchtop in 2011, and fast developed into a monetised blog which “provides endless amounts of advice and information about budgeting and money saving, recipes and cooking tips, parenting and health advice, and business advice” for both mothers and parents in general.

“The flexibility to be available for our kids is one of the main drivers – we can go to their school sports carnivals or be home with them when they are sick. Also being able to work with other awesome mums in business and network and collaborate is fantastic – because we all just get what each other is going through,” Mrs Allen said.

“It can be challenging to be a successful businesswoman whilst raising a family and Nic gives this advice for others thinking about starting their own enterprise.

“Make sure you have a really good support network (family and friends) because you will definitely need them. If you have a partner, make sure they are on board with your decision to start a business and that they will support you all the way as well. It’s crucial. You cannot do it alone”.

Mrs Allen was inspired to start Stay at Home Mum after she was made redundant from her job while pregnant with her second child, while she and husband Brendan were also in the middle of building their own home.

She worked out that she had only $50 per week in her budget to spend on food for her family, so she wanted to find out how others coped, and started the Stay At Home Mum Facebook page in 2011, and Ms Millard soon jumped on board to help.

The AusMumpreneur Awards, presented by The Women’s Business School, “celebrate and recognise Australian Mums in business achieving outstanding success in areas such as business excellence, product development, customer service and digital innovation”. The awards are designed to recognise the growing number of women who successfully balance motherhood and business in a way that suits their life and family.
