A Gympie man ransacked a caravan and stole a car in “plain sight” after he wrecked havoc on a road just over a month prior.

Luke Edward Deakin, 41, began his crime spree on October 11, 2021, when he entered Super Cheap Auto and snuck a drill out of the store.

In March, 2022, Deakin drove recklessly on Sandy Creek Rd at Victory Heights.

Magistrate Chris Callaghan told the Gympie Magistrates Court Deakin smashed into several stationary cars as a result of his driving.

Deakin drove whilst under the influence of liquor or drugs, used an uninsured and unregistered vehicle without a licence, had a restricted item and obstructed two police officers on the same day, the court heard.

More than a month later, on April 26, Deakin snuck into a car, then a caravan and stole the belongings inside, the court heard.

Two days later, he “brazenly” stole a car from an acquaintance’s backyard in “plain sight,” his lawyer Neesha Maidwell said.

His crime spree finished on April 28, when he was found with cannabis, meth and a hypodermic needle in his possession. He was arrested and taken into custody the same day.

Ms Maidwell told the court Deakin was using drugs at the time which was a “significant factor contributing to his bizarre behaviour.”

She said Deakin wishes to attend Petford Training Farm following his release to help his drug issues.

He was sentenced to 18 months prison, disqualified from driving for nine months and is eligible for parole immediately.

Deakin pleaded guilty via video link on Tuesday to stealing, driving without due care or attention, driving under the influence of liquor or drugs, driving without an authorised supervisor, driving an uninsured and unregistered vehicle, two counts of obstructing police, failing to dispose of a syringe, possessing a restricted item, cannabis, meth and a hypodermic needle, stealing a car, and two counts of entering a dwelling to steal.
