A 20-year-old Gympie man took advantage of the region’s flood tragedy when the CBD was at its most vulnerable.

Kyle Mitchell Lino Ambrosetti broke into a closed Mary St shop on May 14 with intention to steal, the same day business owners feared their premises would flood a third time this year.

Parts of the Gympie CBD were affected by flooding as the Mary River peaked at 16.01m on May 14.

Ambrosetti previously pleaded not guilty on July 25 to entering premises but has since changed his plea and a hearing was cancelled.

Duty lawyer Chris Anderson told the court Ambrosetti will commence work at Nolan Meats.

He had not started his job yet as he was dealing with drug addiction, Mr Anderson told the court.

“What’s his drug of choice?” magistrate Chris Callaghan asked.

“Methylamphetamine, Your Honour” Mr Anderson said.

“As if I have to ask,” Mr Callaghan said.

Ambrosetti’s car was also recently ignited and an investigation is ongoing, Mr Anderson told the court.

Ambrosetti pleaded guilty to contravening a police protection notice, two counts of obstructing police, breaching a bail condition, evading police, possessing property used in commission of a crime, contravening a police direction, failing to give a statutory declaration, possessing a utensil or pipe used in commission of a crime, fraud and entering premises to commit an indictable offence in Gympie Magistrates Court from custody on Monday.

His matter was adjourned to November 28, 2022 for sentencing and was released on bail.
