A man charged with a Mary St break-in during the May 2022 flood has been convicted of obstructing police. Read what was said in court:

A 20-year-old Gympie man was sentenced in Gympie Magistrates Court on Monday for obstructing police when they stopped a car to arrest him.

Kyle Mitchell Lino Ambrosetti was charged with break and enter, failing to appear and obstruct police and pleaded guilty to failing to appear and obstructing police.

He pleaded not guilty to breaking into a closed Mary Street business on May 14, the same day the Mary River peaked at 16.01m.

Ambrosetti was released on bail to face the court on May 30 but failed to appear, and was spotted by police inside a car the next day.

When police confronted the vehicle, Ambrosetti told the driver to “just drive” repeatedly before he was extracted from the car by police, the court heard.

He was taken to the Gympie Watch House and released on bail the same day.

Ambrosetti didn’t appear in court on June 27 and July 11, saying he was sick on both occasions, the court heard.

“I should probably be taking this more seriously,” Ambrosetti told the court.

He was fined $600 and convictions were not recorded.

He will face the court again on September 1, 2022 in for the remaining charge of break and enter.
