Narelle Polzin recounts terrifying incident between Widgee and Gympie

A Holden parked on the side of a lonely road initially failed to raise alarm bells for this passing Gympie region mum, but what it did next scared her ‘sh--less’ and left her wondering where the nightmare would end. This is what happened:

When nasty windshield notes backfire: "fat piece of sh*t”

A 57-year-old Widgee woman has recounted what she believe may have been an “attempted carjacking” or worse on a quiet country road west of Gympie.

Narelle Polzin was travelling along Glastonbury Rd at Widgee about 5.10am on Thursday when she passed a car parked in the early morning darkness on the side of the road.

The sun had not yet risen and it was gently raining, she said.

She thought nothing of the car and carried on with her journey, until suddenly it appeared directly behind her and began aggressively speeding up and slowing down on her tail.

“He got that close that I couldn’t see his lights in my mirror, so I wasn’t game to slow down to go around a corner or anything,” she said.

The car eventually overtook her, but did not immediately speed off.

But the situation escalated as they approached the one-way Glastonbury bridge.

Mrs Polzin said the car in front suddenly put its hazard lights on and came to an abrupt stop at the end of the bridge and left her with nowhere to go.

She began to reverse, and the other driver did the same.

Panicked, Mrs Polzin locked her doors and frantically called her daughter, Amy, who used a second phone to call the police while still connected to her mother.

But while she tried to escape, the other car did a U-turn at the nearby Glastonbury Hall and drove directly at her, stopping when his headlights were parallel with her door.

“I was scared sh**less … because I thought ‘I haven’t done anything to tick this person off, what do they want?”

Overcome with fear and terrified she was about to become the victim of a carjacking, Mrs Polzin made a beeline for the Gympie Police Station, and the other vehicle stayed on her tail the whole way.

A frightened Mrs Polzin ran a red light near the police station to attempt to get away from the other car, though this did not stop the driver.

She was met by a police officer as she pulled over at the station, while the vehicle behind her continued on towards Horseshoe Bend.

That was the last she saw of it.

Amid the panic, Mrs Polzin said she never saw the driver’s face, nor if there was more than one occupant.

She only saw the last three letters of the number plate and what the car looked like, which she described as light brown coloured Holden Crewman.

She told police of the terrifying encounter, but without dashcam footage there was little they could do.

“They said if I see the car again or if anything happens to get back on the phone to them,” she said.

“They’re going to keep an eye out for it and see if they hear anything else.”

Narelle Polzin raced to the Gympie Police Station, where she immediately made a complaint about the incident.

Mrs Polzin said the encounter was “like something out of a horror movie” and reiterated the importance of locking your car doors.

“When he put his hazard lights on, you sort of think ‘oh, he’s broken down’,” she said.

“If he hadn’t been playing around I might have put my window down to say ‘are you okay?’ … but I thought ‘this isn’t right’.”

A Queensland Police spokesperson said a report had not been made at the time of publishing.
