Gympie teen charged with robbery with violence, assault police

A 16-year-old boy will face Children’s Court on ten charges including robbery with violence, going in public with a knife and serious assault of police.

A 16-year-old boy has been charged with multiple offences over a mini crime spree where he is alleged to have violently robbed a pharmacy for vape pens and broken a police officer’s ribs.

A statement from Queensland Police alleged the crimes were committed across July and August 2023, and also included smashing in the window of a pharmacy in the main street and stealing medicine which he then tried to sell to the public.

It is alleged to have happened about 8.30pm in Mary Street on Sunday, July 16.

Four days later, on Thursday, July 20, at midnight, the boy allegedly graffitied the wall of a dentist on Exhibition Rd at the Southside.

Several weeks later, on Wednesday, August 16, he is accused of entering a store at the Goldfields Shopping Plaza on Nash St just before 6pm, jumping the counter and trying to steal vape pens.

He is also accused of returned to the same shop about 9am on Monday, August 21, jumping the counter again, and fighting with an employee before making off with a box of vape pens.

He was arrested shortly after.

Police allege the 16-year-old was found in possession of a large carving knife and, while in custody following his arrest, assaulted a police officer and broke the officer’s ribs.

The teenager has been charged with robbery with personal violence, four counts of entering premises, two counts of possessing a knife in public, and one count each of obstructing police with serious assault, wilful damage and wilful damage by graffiti.

He will appear in the Gympie Children’s Court at an undisclosed date.
