Guy Anthony Ozanne in court for brutal attack on his own family

A serial criminal and meth addict blew his top when his mother inadvertently got in his way as she was crossing the kitchen to make a cup of coffee. What happened next is sickening.

A 36-year-old convicted burglar held a knife to a woman’s neck and assaulted her multiple times, Gympie Magistrates Court heard on Tuesday.

Guy Anthony Ozanne pleaded guilty to assault occasioning bodily harm while armed, common assault, two counts of property damage, unlawful use of a car and driving without a licence.

He was sentenced to two years jail, but will be released in November.

The court heard Ozanne punched his mother in the face multiple times after she blocked his path when she was trying to get coffee from the kitchen on April 6,2022.

Lawyer Neesha Maidwell told the court Ozanne then took a kitchen knife out and held it to her throat.

When another woman approached, he let his mother go and rushed at the woman, punching her. When his mother tried to grab the phone to call police, he snatched it out of her hands then threw it away.

Police prosecutor Kennedy Grills said Ozanne then grabbed his mother’s neck, holding the knife to the left side of her ribcage. She fell and cut her head on a countertop in the process.

Ozanne continued his assault, kicking his mother multiple times while she was on the ground until she was left with “serious injuries”.

That same day, he stole a car and drove without a licence, the court heard.

He used a knife to slice open a screen door at his grandmother’s property and then broke a window, a wall and a flower pot the same day, it heard.

Ms Maidwell said her client had been diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2021 and was not taking medication properly during the time of offending.

He was not unfamiliar with knives. In 2019, Ozanne threatened a woman with a knife on a train and, later the same month, broke into a home to steal a car. He was sentenced to two years imprisonment, suspended for five years.

He also committed a burglary in 2013 and an attempted robbery in 2015, Mr Callaghan told the court.

Ozanne additionally robbed a sports store while under the influence of meth in 2020 and avoided jail time when he faced court in 2022 after he was diagnosed with the terminal disease.

Ozanne was sentenced to two years imprisonment to be released after seven months on November 5, 2022. His 175 days in pre-sentence custody was declared as time served.

He will be recommitted to Maroochydore Magistrates Court in regard to his previous suspended sentence and was remanded in custody.
