Notorious vile rapist’s drug troubles at Wacol sex offender precinct

One of Queensland’s worst rapists says he can’t get off drugs because they are rife at a Brisbane dangerous sex offenders precinct, a court has heard.

One of Queensland’s most vile rapists says he can’t beat his meth addiction because drugs are rife at the Wacol dangerous sex offenders precinct where he lives.

Former Gympie man Nigel Patrick Robinson, 43, was jailed in 1997 after stalking a woman in a shopping centre and then raping her at knifepoint.

He also attempted to rape another woman and indecently assaulted a nine-year-old girl in a schoolyard.

Robinson pleaded guilty in Richlands Magistrates Court on Wednesday to two charges of possessing dangerous drugs (methylamphetamine) and contravention of a relevant order.

The court heard Robinson was released into the community on November 3.

He was supposed to be on the Suboxone opioid program, but delays meant that did not start until mid-December and by then had fallen back into his old drug-taking ways.

“His only support is his brother and mother and his only recreation is TV,’’ his lawyer Michael Cridland said.

“He had a fight with his brother at the Wacol precinct and was living in the loungeroom in an overcrowded apartment.

“He has made a foolish decision — drugs there are endemic.

“For someone without the life skills to resist, it’s challenging.’’

Magistrate Aaron Simpson pointed out, however, that meth was everywhere, not just at the Wacol precinct.

“It’s endemic because other prisoners bring it on to the precinct,’’ Mr Simpson said.

“But he (Robinson) will find ice everywhere. You will find it on Hamilton Hill.’’

Mr Simpson said drugs were a central risk factor in Robinson’s long history of offending.

However Mr Cridland said his client had had no reports of increased interest in sexual activity and counsellors said he was polite and cooperative.

Mr Simpson said Robinson had a long history under the Dangerous Prisoners (Sexual Offenders) Act 2003 and had repeatedly breached his supervision orders, including in July last year. A supervision order was then extended in November.

“(Despite that) you were picked up with dirty urine, but then you go and use drugs again,’’ he told Robinson, who appeared via videolink.

“Personal deterrence does not apply to you, but general deterrence is needed to send a message to others in the precinct.’’

He sentenced Robinson to three months’ jail on each charge, to be served cumulatively and less time served in custody.

Parole release was set at March 29.
