Sadistic sex offender sentenced for urine drug trick

A psychopathic, sadistic rapist so dangerous he is still detained two decades after his release date has received a new sentence.

Should Australia introduce a public sex offenders register?

A sadistic sex offender so dangerous he has been detained 20 years past his release date has received more jail time for a urine drug testing trick.

Anthony James Donovan was thrown back in jail a decade ago after breaching release conditions for a brutal rape of a female taxi driver in 1995.

While serving time for her knifepoint rape and robbery he was convicted of forcing a prison to perform oral sex on him, earning Donovan more time behind bars.

He has spent most of his life since 1983 behind bars.

Donovan appeared via videolink at Richlands Magistrates Court on Monday (May 31) charged with illegally taking masking drugs to get around routine urine tests.

Magistrate Stuart Shearer said Donovan’s low intelligence, psychopathy and sadism meant he was considered so dangerous he was still detained in a Wacol sex offenders precinct two decades after serving his last criminal sentence.

In 2010 the Supreme Court ordered Donovan be sent back to jail indefinitely after he breached the conditions of a community supervision order.

The Supreme Court is due to decide in August if he is now safe to be released again.

Donovan’s Legal Aid lawyer William Siganto told the court his client had pleaded guilty to two charges of breaching a relevant order but had not demonstrated a “continuing attitude of disobedience’’.

He said the charges were not sex offences, did not involve children and were at the lower end of the scale of offending.

Mr Shearer said Donovan had illegally taken prescription drugs to mask the results of routine drug urine testing.

He told the court Donovan had committed a similar offence last year.

Mr Shearer said it was vital that he sent a message to Donovan and other inmates at the Wacol facility, some of whom had come before him for committing the same urine test ruse.

He sentenced Donovan to a three month prison sentence, of which one month was to be actual jail time.

He recorded convictions on both charges.
