A dangerous and violent paedophile labelled “the worst of the worst” has been sentenced after a drug-related incident at the southwest Brisbane facility he shares with released, serious offenders.
Douglas Brian Jackway, 44, previously a prime suspect in the murder of Daniel Morcombe, was released from jail last December on a strict 15-year supervision order.
He has since been living at a Wacol precinct that houses sex offenders, where he is subject to a 24-hour curfew and is monitored via a GPS tracker.
Jackway pleaded guilty to two counts of contravening a court order after appearing in Richlands Magistrates Court today (July 21).
The court heard he was asked by a female visitor known as “Mookie’’ to help inject methamphetamines into her arm, in January this year.
Legal Aid solicitor Tristan Carlos said visitors were sometimes allowed at the facility, but he believed the woman was not authorised to be on the site and had been invited by another person living at the precinct.
Mr Carlos said Jackway hesitated, but eventually agreed to the woman’s request.
He said that when confronted, Jackway made full admissions and co-operated with police.
“He has had positive feedback from his case workers (since living at the facility),’’ Mr Carlos said.
Magistrate Aaron Simpson said he took into account Jackway’s guilty pleas, his co-operation and limited income, but fined him a total of $1500 and convicted him of both charges.
Mr Simpson said he was impressed that Jackway had not tried to lie.
“Richlands court deals with (residents) at that facility all the time and people there make up all sorts of excuses,’’ he said.
“I accept you had some hesitancy, but administering a drug is very concerning.
“I need to in some way to send a message to others in that precinct to obey court orders.’’
Jackway has spent nearly all his adult life in prison.
He once threatened to cut the throat of a nine-year-old boy after he was caught in the act of raping him. He also molested a young girl.
The attack on the boy was about the time 13-year-old Sunshine Coast schoolboy Daniel Morcombe was abducted and murdered.
Jackway, who had been in the area, at one point became one of the main suspects.
Brett Peter Cowan was later convicted of Daniel’s murder but was never charged in relation to Daniel’s death.
A change.org petition objecting to Jackway’s release to the Wacol precinct gathered about 25,000 signatures.
