Gympie region teenager Levi Hanna has died three days after he was critically injured in an horrific incident, following a heartbreaking plea from his family on Saturday for the community to “say goodbye together”.
A car struck the 14-year-old while he was crossing a rural road at Canina, about 12km northeast of Gympie, on Wednesday.
Levi and his younger sister Scarlett had just stepped off their school bus near their home when he was hit.
Scarlett, 12, has been hailed for heroic efforts, dropping her bag and rushing into the road to help Levi while other motorists and paramedics arrived at the scene.
He was flown to the Queensland Children’s Hospital, where he has remained in a critical condition.
On Saturday afternoon his stepmother, his family asked for the community to help Levi’s family farewell the Gympie State High School student and avid fisherman as they prepare to turn his life support off.
“Levi, our gorgeous baby boy, has already left us in one way, but his heart is still going,” a statement from his family said on Saturday.
“It’s not how my warrior boy would want to be so at 7.14pm tonight we are going to let his soul be free, so he can fish forever.

“His little sisters know he will go to sleep and become a star in the sky for all of us to look at.
“He’s our boy and we love him and his adventures are far from over.
“I know everyone that loves Levi will do what he would want and go fishing for him because that’s what Levi would want.”
The family thanked the community for the outpouring of support for Levi in the statement.

“We know now that right when the car hit him, part of him was already gone, the miracle was we all got to say goodbye,” Mrs Hanna said.
“Now we can all say goodbye together at the same time, so if you love our boy think of him tonight at 7.14pm.
“Fourteen because that’s our boy’s age, and it’s the day of his birthday too; September 14, 2008, when he came into this world and made our lives amazing forever.”
More than $19,000 has been raised for the family through a GoFundMe campaign since it was launched by Mrs Hanna on Thursday, while members of the community, including several junior rugby league clubs, have offered their prayers and support for Levi.
Gympie Junior Rugby League held a gathering at Jack Stokes Oval from 6.30pm for people wanting to “say farewell”, while other junior rugby league clubs across southeast Queensland kept the lights of their fields on at 7.14pm.
