Levi Hanna fighting for life after being struck by car at Canina

The sister of a teenage boy struck by a car after stepping off the bus put in a heroic effort to help him after seeing the horrific accident near Gympie. The 14-year-old is fighting for life in a Brisbane hospital.

The family of a teenage boy fighting for his life in Queensland Children’s Hospital after being struck by a car on a high speed stretch of road near Gympie on Wednesday afternoon say he is “fighting hard” to pull through.

Levi Hanna, 14, suffered life-threatening head injuries in the incident, which happened on the Tin Can Bay Rd about 100m from his home at the end of a school day.

His stepmother Petrina Hanna said he was hit shortly after stepping off the bus.

Levi’s 12-year-old sister Scarlett was “right behind him when he was hit”.

“She saw him go flying,” Mrs Hanna said.

Gympie State High School student Levi Hanna had just gotten off the school bus about 100m from his home when he was struck by a car, leaving him with critical injuries.

Scarlett’s efforts in the wake of the crash were nothing short of heroic.

“She just dropped her school bag and ran for him,” Mrs Hanna said.

Scarlett stepped out to stop traffic on the key arterial road between Gympie and the Cooloola Coast while passers-by and then first responders rushed to his aid.

Levi was flown to the Queensland Children’s Hospital in a critical condition and Scarlett had been left “distraught” by the tragedy.

Mrs Hanna said on Thursday morning Levi had not yet woken up.

He was surrounded by his family at the hospital, including Mrs Hanna’s partner Todd, and his mother Lilly Zrehen and her partner Kiltan, his siblings and his aunts, all of which have “come from across the country”.

Levi Hanna’s stepmother said he loved fishing, and his family was playing his favourite fishing shows at his bedside in hope it will help him wake up.

She said the Year 9 Gympie High student was “headstrong” teenager who loved fishing, footy, the beach and his dog “Rusty … which is his baby”.

“He loves animals, he loves the land,” Mrs Hanna said.

The family was playing his favourite fishing shows on YouTube next to him in the hope it will help him wake up.

“He’s fighting hard,” Mrs Hanna said.

“We have hope. “We’re all hoping for the best.”
