Authorities have revealed the early morning fire that gutted the home of Gympie boxer Danny Hawkins was not being treated as suspicious, as the community rallies behind the embattled family.
A QFES spokesman said fire investigators who attended the Parsons Rd house in the hours after the Tuesday morning blaze had been unable to identify the source.
They were able to locate where it began, he said, which was on the back balcony on the home’s second storey.
The spokesman said QFES investigations into the fire were now finished.
Police said in a statement to The Gympie Times the day after the fire “at this stage the matter is not being treated as suspicious”.
“The cause of the fire is still part of an ongoing investigation,” they said.
Meanwhile, friends have rallied behind the embattled family with an online fundraiser launched to help them recover.
Creator Kane Lindsay said in the fundraising launch the campaign was to “raise some money for bills, clothes, anything that the family might need”.
“When he isn‘t training, he is helping the local youth stay out of trouble, even brings them into his boxing classes to help guide them,” Mr Lindsay said.
The fire is the latest blow for the Hawkins family in what has been a turbulent year.
Mr Hawkins was injured after being stabbed in the front yard of the family home in September 2021, and his boxing gym in the centre of the city was inundated in the February and May floods.
In June 2022, the popular boxing coach had only returned to the ring for the first time since he was injured.
