Two teenagers have helped save their family and friends from a fire that completely destroyed their Gympie home on Tuesday morning, raising the alarm after seeing the fire on the veranda.

Kiara Hawkins told The Gympie Times she and her friend woke to see the fire had taken hold on the verandah through the sliding glass doors.

Their curtain was on fire and the two girls quickly warned the rest of the family who ran for safety, not stopping to save their belongings.

“We didn’t even grab our phones,” Miss Hawkins said.

The house was full of people as the Hawkins family had family and friends staying with them at the time.

Kiara’s father, well known Gympie boxer and coach Danny Hawkins, was taken to Gympie Hospital in a stable condition with multiple burns to his head.

A QAS spokesman said the injuries were “minor”.

Five crews were called to the blaze at the Parson Rd home about 5am, on August 16, 2022.

A QFES spokesman said the home was quickly “engulfed” by the fire, with both floors of the two-storey building and its roof space alight when crews arrived.

Fireys had the blaze under control and largely extinguished by 6am.

They were still at the scene an hour after, damping down hot spots.

The QFES spokesman said fire investigators had been alerted about the blaze.

It is the second drama for the Hawkins family in less than a year.

Mr Hawkins was stabbed in the front yard of the same Parsons Road home in September 2021 when a group of five men allegedly stormed the front yard, some bearing weapons.

There is no suggestion of any connection between the alleged stabbing and Tuesday’s fire.

In June 2022, Mr Hawkins returned to the ring for the first time since he was injured.
