Concern was raised this week about the disappearance of Gympie’s beloved heritage listed footbridge on Station Road.
The timber footbridge linking Lady Mary Terrace to the old train station site is in the process of being restored at a cost of $370,000, after spending the past decade closed to the public.
But observant residents have noticed the entire structure now missing, and they want answers.
It is believed it has been removed to be rebuilt off-site, in keeping with guidelines for heritage restorations.
Gympie Regional Council stated earlier this month: “Something old with something new: From next week work will commence to replace the Station Road Footbridge. This iconic piece of Gympie heritage was closed in 2010 due to safety concerns. So we can comply with heritage requirements we will be replacing the structure on a like-for-like basis. We can't wait!”
When the restoration was announced in March, it was expected the restored footbridge would be back in place and open to the public by late April.

It received a stay of execution from the Queensland Heritage Register based on its inclusion in the old Gympie train station complex after Transport and Main Roads declared it unsafe in 2017.
