The Gold City’s strong presence in top flight rugby league has gone up another notch overnight, with former Gympie Devils junior Selwyn Cobbo making his NRL debut under Thursday night lights.
The 18-year-old Cherbourg product suited up on a wing in Kevin Walters’ side, playing all 80 minutes but failing to score as the Broncos went down 52-24 to the St George Illawarra Dragons in Sydney.
The youngster started out for the Cherbourg Hornets before playing fullback for the Devils in both under 16s and 18s, before moving on to the Wynnum Manly Seagulls and the Queensland Under 18 Emerging Origin squad, also under Walters.
The Devils shared a touching message for Cobbo ahead of his debut game.
“From everyone here at the Gympie Devils congratulations Selwyn Cobbo on your debut for the Brisbane Broncos tonight,” the post read.
“Selwyn was a part of our club in 2019 where he played fullback for our under 18s side.
“All the best for tonight’s game against the Dragons no doubt you’ll kill it.
“Our club will be right behind you tonight. Rip in mate.”
The post came with a shared video of the Broncos presenting Cobbo with his debut jersey, with his proud loved ones watching on.
“I just want to say thankyou Kevvie for giving me this opportunity. I’m just happy to be here now and tomorrow night I won’t let yous (sic) down,” Cobbo told his teammates.
