Major construction works are underway on the $1bn Gympie bypass with Bruce Hwy motorists urged to follow directions with detours and delays this month.

New milestone hit on $1bn Gympie Bypass work

Motorists travelling on the Bruce Highway should expect detours and delays at Woondum and Curra this month as construction begins on the $1bn Gympie bypass.

Night works at Woondum will be held from 7pm to 5am from Sunday, May 14 to Friday, June 9 to allow for construction of concrete barriers, guardrails and pavement at two new 100m dual lane bridges.

“During this time, southbound traffic on the Bruce Highway will be detoured onto the Old Bruce Highway between Woondum and the Traveston interchange, where the Puma Service Centre is located,” Wide Bay MP Llew O’Brien said.

“An additional two new 100 metre bridges will also be constructed to carry the new bypass alignment over Upper Curra Creek, with the concrete bridge girders being transported during night works along Harvey Siding and Bradys Roads at Curra.”

The girders are expected to be transported over four consecutive nights between 12am and 6pm, from Tuesday, May 9 to Friday, May 12.

Mr O’Brien urged motorists to follow directions and guidance from road crews and drive to the changed conditions.

“Section D, the four lane 26km realignment of the Bruce Highway between Cooroy and Curra is set to open in late 2024 and will bypass Gympie, eliminating eight sets of traffic lights,” he said.

There have been six road incidents reported since the start of this year along the Bruce Hwy between Cooroy and Curra, according to Mr O’Brien’s office.

The Wide Bay Burnett stretch of the Bruce Hwy was rated as Queensland’s deadliest region for road fatalities in 2021 when it accounted for more than 10 per cent of the state’s road toll.

Once the bypass is complete, the Bruce Highway will be a flood proof four-lane highway from Brisbane to north of Gympie.

“The new bypass will reduce travel time, improve safety, and increase freight efficiency,” Mr O’Brien said.
