Body of missing Gympie man William Swiggs believed to be found

The search for a missing Gympie man travelling to South Australia has come to a sad end, following the discovery of a body in floodwaters in NSW.

A body found in floodwaters in southwestern NSW is believed to be that of an 89-year-old Gympie man, missing for seven weeks.

William Swiggs was reported missing after setting off from Gympie to South Australia on October 31, travelling through Victoria, ABC has reported.

He last spoke with his family on November 2, after stopping at a Temora service station five hours west of Sydney about 7.30am.

Rescue chopper called after Qld man crushed by tractor

He was reported missing almost two weeks later on November 13.

An appeal for information was made by police on November 23.

A body was this week found inside a vehicle at Williams Crossing Rd, Barmedman, 25 minutes northeast of the service station.

Authorities were alerted to it about 2.30pm Tuesday.

Although formal identification is yet to be made, New South Wales police believe it is Mr Swiggs.

Investigations are continuing.

A report will be presented to the coroner.
