Gympie Mayor Glen Hartwig has cited Borumba Dam and water security for the Gympie region as the issue of high priority for his council ahead of today’s state budget.

“Water security and allocation is a high priority,” Mr Hartwig said when asked what his wishlist in the budget would be for the Gympie region.

“This is an issue that has been raised, and we hope to see the state budget support this region and the challenges we are facing now and will face in the future,” he said.

“The discussion around Borumba Dam and our future water allocation will become more and more of an issue as our region continues to see growth, and we need to ensure we can support our community well into the future.”

Mr Hartwig said the council had been very fortunate in the past with funding from the state government allowing work to be completed on infrastructure the council had not had the budget for.

“Unfortunately, over the past 12 months or so, more issues have been raised, specifically with our water infrastructure network’s aging pipes which have not been replaced,” he said.

“And of course, any funding to upgrade our road network to ensure our roads are as safe as they can be would be most welcome.”
